Here’s something you don’t get to read often. Below is a transcript of an interview with Ken Sugimori, art director on Pokemon Black and White, as well as interviews with some members from the development team. They describe the thought process of how they designed some of the new Pokemon from Pokemon Black and White.
“There’s about 17 people in our design team, and generally what happens is they each draw their own Pokemon and then they get discussed over group meetings. We didn’t have a very long development cycle with this game, so I had a lot of one-on-one time with each designer.” – Ken Sugimori
“There’s no particular number that each designer needs to create, but they come up with far, far more designs than actually get included in the game.” – Takao Unno
Sugimori on Reshiram and Zekrom designs: “Those were the main ones. We had previously decided they would be black and white dragons, and that they’d be Fire and Electric type. I wanted to have a pretty stark contrast between the two, so Reshiram was given a light, airy, ladylike design while Zekrom has a much tougher and manly look. The tails on both Pokemon are the central points of their respective designs — they’re based off of those electric turbines you see, and they give the impression that they’re these great big generators of fire or electric energy.”
“The original idea with Pokabu was to have a Pokemon that figuratively looked ‘cute enough to eat’ at the start, but would eventually evolve to the point where it’d wind up eating you instead,” Lee told Famitsu. “Also, I read somewhere once that pigs wallow in mud because otherwise they have trouble regulating their body temperature, so I thought it’d be amusing if it shot fire out of its snout to do that instead. Out of the first three Pokemon, we eventually decided that Tsutaja [the Grass type] would be the ‘cool’ one and Mijumaru [the Water type] would be the ‘cute’ one. Pokabu wound up being more of the ’sidekick’ sort — clumsy but lovable. He gradually evolves and matures into something a lot more reliable as you play, so it makes the effort to raise him seem pretty worth it, I think.” – graphic designer Lee Hyun-Jung
“Janobii and Chaoboo [Tsutaja and Pokabu's first evolutions, respectively] were already done up by the time I worked on Mijumaru’s evolutions, so I envisioned something that could get in between those two and stop them whenever they got in a fight. For Daikenki [Mijumaru's final evolution], I decided that a full-on change in shape would be the best. I caught a trained-seal show at the Sunshine International Aquarium in Ikebukuro around that time, and it really impressed me how strong those seals were — they just seemed so powerful, especially the sound they made when they stamped on the ground. I worked that into the design, and Daikenki was the result.” – designer Yusuke Ohmura
“A lot of people think that our graphic designers do nothing but the basic Pokemon portraits, but they’re also responsible for the in-game pixel art and 3D sequences. Since we have the Pokemon constantly moving during battle, we had to decide how each one would act when executing this or that move, or what they should look like when they were put to sleep or whatever. It was a lot more work than I ever imagined it’d be.” – Takao Unno
“Since you can bring in your old Pokemon after finishing the story, we also had to add new animation to all of the Pokemon in the book. It was just a massive quantity of work, and I really respect everyone on the team for plowing through it.” – Ken Sugimori

It’s funny how Reshiram is supposed to be the “ladylike” one…but has that great big feather peep.
I still don’t like the fire line at all.

Besides the crotch tuft, Reshiram does look very feminine. It’s still a really bada$$ Pokemon though.
I really like the starters a lot now but dislike their final typing.
For me, Jaroda should be Grass/Dragon, Emboar should be Fire/Dark, and Daikenki should be Water/Fighting.
i was really looking forward to a water/fightning this gen, but i still love them all

I agree. I was really hoping that there would be more uniqueness in the final types. With the water one having a samurai influence, I would have even been ok with another water steel. And with Jaroda, I totally hoped for a Grass-Dragon. If it’s already going to be weak against Ice again, why not go for double or nothing?

“We didn’t have a very long devolpment time with game”
obviously would explain some of the weird designs, missing features, zelda like feel of the games, and more stuff that couldve gotten more work.
nonetheless, i still like these games though

so basically what everyone saying is that pokabu was ment to look like that in the first place and it was ment to look weird i personally never EVER liked pokabu and evoulotions if somehow i ended up with a pokabu i would keep him at a pokabu but this time i think im gonna go with the water type its funny how they create pokemon by making everyone draw a piture and it gets picked because i thought ken sugmori created all the pokemon.

This generation looks amazing and I love the new starters and legendaries as well! I think I’ll get both games because I can’t decide on only one! I can’t decide which starter to get, either fire or grass because I’ve always gone for the water starter!

I think these are going to be the best games yet, next the emerald.
Anyways, are there multiple save files?

No, there is only one save file available.
maybe darkreon is right, zekrom is cooler than reshiram, but after i take aa good look, i think zekrom’s tail is similar to slowbro’s. and according to my opinion, zekrom should be Dragon-Steel type just like dialga, related to its black hardened body, and the name zekrom.according to me, it’s like a corrupted spelling of chrome

Zekuromu should have been dark/electric Pokemon. Anyway, the “kuro” in the name means black. “Shira” in Reshiramu is white (“shiro”).

Despite the whole Yin/Yang thing, I believe that Reshiram would be female and Zekrom a male if they had genders. I don’t get how people say Reshiram has an…extra “appendage”. Its fur people! O_O
